9 Questions with Full Answers

1. Simplify completely:

3xx2−4−2x+2\frac{3x}{x^2 – 4} – \frac{2}{x + 2}

Solution

=3x(x−2)(x+2)−2(x−2)(x+2)(x−2)= \frac{3x}{(x-2)(x+2)} – \frac{2(x-2)}{(x+2)(x-2)} =3x−2x+4(x−2)(x+2)= \frac{3x – 2x + 4}{(x-2)(x+2)} =x+4×2−4= \frac{x + 4}{x^2 – 4}

2. A trader bought goods for ₦84,000 and sold at a 25% profit. Find the selling price.

Solution

Profit = 25% of 84,000
= 0.25 × 84,000 = ₦21,000

Selling price = 84,000 + 21,000 = ₦105,000

3. Solve the simultaneous equations:

2x+y=112x + y = 11 x−y=1x – y = 1

Solution

Add the equations:
3x = 12 → x = 4
Substitute: y = 11 – 2(4) = 3
Solution: x = 4, y = 3

4. The lengths of sides of a triangle are 7 cm, 9 cm, and 12 cm. Find the area using Heron’s formula.

Solution

Semi-perimeter:

s=7+9+122=14s = \frac{7 + 9 + 12}{2} = 14

Area:

s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)\sqrt{s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)} =14(14−7)(14−9)(14−12)= \sqrt{14(14-7)(14-9)(14-12)} =14×7×5×2= \sqrt{14 × 7 × 5 × 2} =980=31.3 cm2= \sqrt{980} = 31.3\ \text{cm}^2

5. A cylinder has radius 7 cm and height 10 cm. Find its volume.

Solution

V=πr2h=π(72)(10)V = \pi r^2h = \pi(7^2)(10) =490π=1539.4 cm3= 490\pi = 1539.4\ \text{cm}^3

6. Find the mean of the following scores:

5, 8, 9, 12, 6, 10, 15.

Solution

Sum = 65
Number = 7
Mean = 65 ÷ 7 = 9.29

7. Expand and simplify:

(2x−3)(x+5)(2x – 3)(x + 5)

Solution

=2x(x+5)−3(x+5)= 2x(x+5) – 3(x+5) =2×2+10x−3x−15= 2x^2 + 10x – 3x – 15 =2×2+7x−15= 2x^2 + 7x – 15

8. The distance between two towns on a map is 5 cm. If the scale is 1:50,000, find the actual distance in km.

Solution

1 cm = 50,000 cm = 0.5 km
So 5 cm = 5 × 0.5 = 2.5 km

9. Find the equation of the line passing through (1, 4) and (5, 12).

Solution

Gradient:

m=12−45−1=2m = \frac{12-4}{5-1} = 2

Equation:

y−4=2(x−1)y – 4 = 2(x – 1) y=2x+2y = 2x + 2
