PASSAGE 1

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

The rapid advancement of technology has transformed almost every aspect of human life. In Nigeria, digital technology has become an important tool for communication, education, commerce and governance. Mobile phones, computers and internet-enabled devices have connected millions of people to information and opportunities that were previously inaccessible.

The educational sector has particularly benefited from technological innovation. Students can now access online libraries, participate in virtual classes and collaborate with peers across different geographical locations. Teachers also utilize digital platforms to prepare instructional materials, assess students and communicate with parents. During emergencies and disruptions to traditional schooling, technology has ensured continuity in learning through virtual classrooms and online resources.

However, despite these advantages, several challenges continue to hinder the effective utilization of technology in Nigeria. Poor electricity supply, inadequate internet infrastructure and high costs of digital devices remain significant obstacles. In many rural communities, access to reliable internet services is limited, making it difficult for students and teachers to fully benefit from digital learning opportunities.

Furthermore, the increasing use of digital technology has introduced concerns relating to cybersecurity, online fraud and misinformation. Many internet users fall victim to cybercriminals who exploit their lack of awareness and digital literacy. The spread of false information through social media platforms has also created social and political tensions in various communities.

To maximize the benefits of technology, stakeholders must invest in digital infrastructure, improve internet accessibility and promote digital literacy among citizens. Governments, private organizations and educational institutions must work together to create a safe and inclusive digital environment capable of supporting national development.

PASSAGE 2

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of Nigeria’s economy. Long before the discovery of crude oil, agriculture served as the backbone of economic activities and provided employment for a large percentage of the population. Major cash crops such as cocoa, groundnut, rubber and palm produce contributed significantly to export earnings and national development.

In recent decades, however, the sector has faced numerous challenges. Rapid urbanization has led many young people to migrate from rural areas to cities in search of white-collar jobs. This movement has reduced the availability of labour for agricultural activities. Climate change has also affected farming through irregular rainfall patterns, flooding and prolonged droughts, resulting in lower agricultural productivity.

Another challenge confronting the sector is inadequate access to modern farming equipment and agricultural financing. Many small-scale farmers rely on traditional farming methods that limit productivity. Poor rural infrastructure, including bad roads and inadequate storage facilities, further contributes to post-harvest losses and reduced profitability.

Despite these challenges, agriculture continues to offer immense opportunities for economic growth. Increased investment in mechanized farming, irrigation systems, agricultural research and rural infrastructure can significantly boost productivity. Furthermore, encouraging youth participation in agriculture can help address unemployment while enhancing food security.

A sustainable agricultural sector is essential for national development because it contributes to food production, employment generation, industrial growth and poverty reduction. Governments and private investors therefore have important roles to play in revitalizing the sector for future generations.
